The gravitational self-force problem

2018 edition

Marius Oltean

The ground-based discovery of gravitational waves announced two years ago has ushered in a new era for astronomy, and efforts are presently underway for the launch of gravitational wave detectors in space anticipated within the next two decades. In this talk I will discuss one of the main theoretical problems in general relativity still faced in the modeling of their expected sources: namely, the “self-force” of a massive orbiting body.
