REPRESENTATION, MYTH AND METAPHOR OF THE TOWER OF BABEL. FROM THE LINGUISTIC FORMATION OF COLLECTIVE IDENTITIES TO THE TECHNOLOGICAL IDENTITIES OF GLOBALITY.

María Bendito Haro

The current research project is a symbolic and iconographic exploration of the Tower of Babel myth as a metaphor of man’s relationship with the universe.

It revolves around the artistic image of the Tower of Babel and has, as basis of thinking, the understanding of the world in the Euro-American history, which ultimately refers to the history of metaphorical knowledge. Therefore, the doctoral thesis is divided in three phases: the presentation of the iconographic prototype of the Tower of Babel as a measure and situation of human beings in the world; its re-interpretation and conversion processes and how they explain the newborn metaphors in other contexts and with different artistic practices; and its inclusion in the current and global context.
